This weekend, The Keys to Canaan partnered with First Rock Baptist Church, Urban Outreach Ministries and the Community Wellness Alliance to hold our 2015 Back-to-School/Health Fair/Community Day, in Ward 7. Our day included helping families connect to health and technology resources. All youth also received a backpack with school supplies. The East River Family Strengthening Collaborative helped us sponsor this annual activity.

Some of the resources available to the community were:
-Information on affordable internet options, affordable computers and technology training through OCTO
-Technology assistance and demonstrations
-Smoking cessation information
-High blood pressure, diabetes and brest cancer prevention
-Dental health resources and free toothbrushes and mouthwash
-Healthy food location information, and a bag filled with healthy food options
- and healthy meal planning with meal preparation demonstrations.
Residents lining up to for resources.
The fair was well attended, and helped give parents the tools they need to make smart decisions about their family’s health and education this school year.
This summer our team is doing great work in the community. On behalf of the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) we are reaching out to residents to get them connected to affordable internet, affordable computers and free technology training options.
OCTO outreach team members in Ward 8
A survey found that over 160,000 DC residents do not have access to internet in their homes— many of them in wards 5, 7, and 8. We are targeting these wards in our outreach efforts. Our outreach has been both door-to-door and participating in community events. So far we have worked in these communities: Benning Terrace and Marshall Heights in ward 7, Barry Farm and Hillsdale in ward 8, and Edgewood in Ward 5.

Thank You The Keys to Canaan Family
Thanks to your support The Keys to Canaan raised close to $1,000 on Giving Tuesday 2013. Your generosity helped us improve the homes of three of our senior village members. This success has also led us to make Tuesdays The Keys to Canaan Giving Tuesday. So, tell your family and friends about The Keys to Canaan Giving Tuesday. On any Tuesday of the month or day throughout the month you can make a donation to The Keys to Canaan. Your support will help us continue our efforts to help parents and families in our community develop healthier lifestyles, and to reach out to senior citizens as they age in their homes. Like us on Facebook and donate here. Blessings…
Making a Difference
Thanks to the support of The Keys to Canaan Family, we were able to purchase supplies, which was used to improve the homes of three of our senior village members. On Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Monday, January 20, 2014, our staff volunteered their time, talents and resources and replaced drywall, painted living rooms, dens, and stairways, and reflected with our seniors about how Dr. King changed our society.
In Spring 2014, we look forward to improving more homes, providing more families with information which help them improve their health and outlook on life, and celebrating our 10th year anniversary on Monday, April 14, 2014. Continue to visit our website and Face book page for updates. Please donate here.
